About This Project

I have lived in upstate New York my entire life. Half-Moons were a staple in my upbringing. One of my father's oldest friends, Big Smokey he used to call him, would bring me a Half-Moon every time he visited. I remember it as a delicious treat, and one that I still enjoy today. Later in life, I moved to my current home in Utica, New York. After living here for some time I found out the creation of my favorite child hood treat was right in my back yard. So, it was perfect when my Journalism 490 professor asked us to do a news story on anything we wanted. I had always wanted to dig a little deeper into the history of this treat, and now I had a reason to start digging. Through my research I found out the Half-Moon was created by Harry Hemstraught, 100 years ago in Utica, New York.
